New Year's Eve in Calabria

We're not done with the holiday season! With the end of the year right around the corner, I thought I'd share how we celebrate New Year's Eve in Calabria.
As the year draws to a close, things have calmed down. The hard work of gathering chestnuts and harvesting olives is done. The weather is humid and cold, with frequent rains. We spend a lot of time by the fire, being, rather than doing.

In contrast to the progressive dinner parties and raucous parties I attended with friends in the U.S., New Year's Eve in Calabria is calm. The perfect vibe to end one moment and begin another.
But First, We Eat.
Since Zia (Aunt) Caterina hosted the evening meal on Christmas Eve, it's Mamma's turn. I'll help her prepare dinner (if she'll let me), we'll extend the table so all 15 or so of us fit, and Papa will stoke the fire to make sure it's warm and inviting. Charlie the dog will excitedly yap whenever anyone arrives.
By now, I've learned that these holiday meals are like Sunday lunch on steroids. There's too much food. I want it all. But I've learned to pace myself.
Last year, I introduced a bit of my American culture with a few rounds of Uno. It was so fun! Afterward, under my instruction, we wrote what we wanted in the new year on paper lanterns. We lit them...but they either caught on fire or didn't float away on our wishes. I think we'll skip that this year.

We also set off fireworks and played with sparklers. Always a good time.
It's strange to me...I used to want to go to a party on NYE, but now, I look forward to spending New Year's Eve in Calabria with my adopted family and my son. Nothing complex. No heels and makeup. Just love, laughter, and good wine.
