The Simplicity of Ancient French Engineering

Let it not be said that the French (or Europeans in general) don’t know their engineering. When we arrived in Pignans, I took note of the paint-flecked shutters that adorn every window, but didn’t give them more consideration.

That night, as the chilly night air crept in, I thought, if only there were a way to keep out that Provencal chill!

Duh. The shutters! And so, each night I draw the shutters closed, as people have done for centuries, and in the morning, I throw them open to let in the sunlight, if there is any.
