Living in Soverato: One Year Later

I realize I write more about Davoli, where Fra's family is from, than Soverato, where we live. So let me tell you how things are going here, more than a year after I first moved, and eight months after Fra moved in with me!

The Summer Was Tolerable

I moved to Soverato in September, after the throngs of summer visitors had left, so I wasn't sure what to expect once July rolled around.

There definitely were more people. Our street, which normally has a few free parking spots, became full. We often left the car parked and took his Vespa, since it's easier to find parking for it.

To me, the beaches weren't crowded. I never felt like we were packed like sardines when we went to the sea (although, I will say: Italians have a weird habit of parking their umbrella close to other people, even when there's an empty beach!)

Still, being the solitary girl that I am, I went to the beach early (or later in the evening, which was also lovely for a swim), had my swim, dried off for an hour, and then returned. I'm not one for spending the entire day at the beach. Get in, get out, move on.

Having Friends Nearby is Awesome

This summer, we met a couple who lives a block away from us. This fall, we met a Canadian family who also lives a block away! It's fantastic to have friends nearby, and it's easy to meet up for an aperitivo or at a festa. No need to drive to meet up!

This is My Favorite Time of Year

While the summer definitely had an electric energy to it, I much prefer September to November. Up until a few weeks ago, it was warm enough to swim still (thanks, global warming!). The crowds are gone, but we still have sunny days, and I love strolling along the lungomare and sitting for a bit to watch the waves.

Even when the storms come, which they do in winter, I love the sea. It's turbulent. Its colors are like a bruise. It is a thing of beauty.

Fra and I Are Making This House a Home

The last few months, I've been nesting. Making small changes to our house to make it feel more like ours, despite the vintage furniture we inherited with the rental.

We've created a balcony garden, where we love to have an Aperol spritz together in the summer. We just bought a couch, a first for us as a new-ish couple! Piano, piano, I'm buying organizers and art to fill our happy home. Lucky for me, Fra loves all of my design ideas. And he's great at putting things together!

Soverato Still Gets Two Thumbs Up

In terms of a decent-sized town that has amenities like restaurants and stores, and that is in close proximity to other places in Calabria, I still have to recommend Soverato.

One of my blog readers, who is now a friend, read what I'd written about Soverato, and it sounded pretty good to her. She now has found her home here!

So if you're thinking about moving to Calabria but aren't sure where, come visit Soverato (and connect with me!).
